How to Get Free Dental Care in Utah (that isn’t Scary)

When is a trip to the dentist not the worst thing ever? When it’s free!

The scene is a grisly one: I lie supine in a brightly lit room while a masked female wielding a wicked-looking metal object instructs me not to move. The area is full of strange instruments and various chemicals, and I can hear the muffled whimper of a child in the other room–for him it must already be too late. As she dons gloves and approaches me, I gulp in anxiety, but she has already attached a sinister device that drains my mouth of saliva and my heart of hope. Before I can scream “Geneva Conventions” she is upon me and begins her twisted procedure.

This is not a scene from the final days of a Gitmo interrogation chamber. I am at the dentist’s office. And in reality, my dramatic introduction could not be farther from the truth: I’m actually having a pretty good time.

Now don’t get me wrong, going to the dentist is at about the same spot on my list of fun things to do as waiting in line at the DMV and filing my taxes, but there is one thing that makes this visit almost pleasant enough to actually be enjoyable: it’s totally free.

Times are tough, and one way to save money is to take advantage of the many services offered by local students who are willing to work for free in order to get experience. This week I visit the Utah College of Dental Hygiene in Orem in search of quality, free dental care. Though the prospect of “student” dental care might seem frightening, my experience was universally positive, and I would highly recommend it to everyone.

dental hygienist student

Chelsie is a second year student at UCDH

My hygienist’s name is Chelsie, and though she is second-year student, you would never know it, since she is knowledgeable, professional, and highly competent. We start off with a full set of x-rays, and then she leads me back to the dental chair and explains the cleaning and fluoride procedures she is about to administer.

The Utah College of Dental Hygiene is a private, two year program that prepares students to become dental hygienists. Second-year students have the chance to work in their on-site clinic and offer free care to the public to gain experience in the field. The facilities are state-of-the-art, and Chelsie tells me that since manufacturers are eager to promote their latest and greatest products, the college actually is actually better equipped with more cutting-edge gear than most of the dental offices in the state.

As Chelsie works, a roaming supervisor, who is an experienced and licensed hygienist, checks on her periodically to answer any questions she or I may have.

I ask her if there is any bad blood between the school and local dentist offices, since they could be potentially taking clients from them, but she tells me that, “dentists feel bad that they can’t help everyone.” The school is a place they can send uninsured people where they know they will get good care for free. Therefore, she says there is no competition, “We’re looking for people in need who don’t have access to regular dental care.”

Something I find particularly interesting is how desperate the students are for patients. Apparently, word on the free clinic has yet to get out. In order to pass their board certification (think of it as a final exam for hygienists), students need to have someone to work on to prove their competence on a specific day in front of an examination panel. The thing is, students are not allowed to test on someone with good teeth–they need something challenging. This requirement leads to a strange phenomenon: the desperate students are paying people to let them clean their teeth. We’re not talking about chump change, either. Chelsie says that some of the girls will pay in excess of several hundred dollars if they find someone with particularly bad teeth who will agree to come in for their exam.

All dressed up and no teeth to clean

While x-rays, cleaning, and fluoride treatments are free, they do not fill cavities or perform any other advanced procedures. However, if you do need these, conveniently located next door is a “half price” dental clinic. There are no students there, only real dentists, and they can do all the things the students cannot for about half the cost of a regular clinic.

Now I should mention that although the services I received were free, there is technically a $5 instrument sterilization fee I did have to pay. This money is an OSHA requirement and is not charged by the school. However, that five bucks got me the most thorough dental care I have ever received, and was certainly worth every penny.

The final word is this is deal that you cannot possibly go wrong with. It is free dental care with cutting-edge gear, and, if your oral hygiene is disgusting enough, they might even end up paying you!

Do any of these schools have honest to goodness dental care?I need more than just a cleaning for me and my daughter. We do not qualify forMedicaid, and besides that.. Medicaid does not even provide dental care! It effects your health to have infected teeth!

  3. I have two broken teeth, and no dental. My family is on an extremely tight budget, with a brand new baby and my husband being on furlough. Could the broken teeth be fixed with the sealant? I honestly can not afford even half of the price of crowns, even just one. (Which i think may be what needs to be done). I don’t think the “free” clinics would cover. Sealants are covered by them though. Any help would be appreciated.

  4. I need dental implants, I’m low income and disabled, where in Ogden, can I go for safe treatment where a dentist will treat you with respect and understand how much pain your in since I am very sensitive to dental procedures. I have had tons of work done and they just send me to another and another and do on, I know I need implants and I have checked out fresh start and other places but unless our born with a golden spoon who can afford $35,000.00 to have the whole mouth done. I’m in my mid fifties and would like to be able to chew and eat and enjoy but for so many years I have been miserable and more miserable forking out money to dentist who only do a half ### job and call it good then give me a horrific bill and to this day and its been a year the dentist who put a post in I have nothing but infections in it, is there any dentist I can go to that takes low income adults to help me with this process?

    Kindly

    • still looking for dental treatment? Implants, crowns, fillings? I am a second year dental student at the new (and only) dental school in South Jordan Utah. whatever you need done can be done by either one of the students or one of the faculty who teach at the school. I just presented and implant case to a patient to day and the cost was less than half of the cost you would pay at most private practices. Any questions email me at jjbeus11@gmail.com.

  5. 6. I have some experience in the dental field. I can tell you that the Dr.’s at half dental were not successful ato their own dental offices, and do not have a good reputation. They may be half price of some imaginary office, but thier prices are definately not half price of the going rate of local offices. FALSE ADVERTISING! I recommend doing research before you go there.

  7. I went to the HalfDental here in Southern Utah today after reading these postings yesterday. I have no insurance and had to have an extraction. I called at 8am and they got me in at 11am due to a cancellation. They charged me a $25 fee to be seen with an x-ray of the specific tooth. The (simple)extraction was $90. I paid $115 altogether. The dentist and his staff were very nice and the office was comfortable and clean. I was impressed with the care the dentist gave me. My tooth was very hard to numb but he was very patient with me and advanced with caution so as not to hurt me. He respected my wishes and did not try to pressure me into any services that I did not ask for. I feel like the visit was well worth what I paid. However, I WAS able to find a local dentist who was $5 cheaper. So, I feel that the prices are probably competitive, but not “half priced”. The service was great and I will more than likely return for future services. Thank you!

  8. I had some teeth pulled there and I had no problems. The prices were reasonable and I am going to go back to them to have my teeth finished. I do believe that they do dentures. I am calling them on Monday to double check. Where I do not have insurance and am unemployed I know that their costs are more reasonable than other places. It only costs about $25 a tooth to be pulled. I had five pulled and they only charged me about $220. They were great!

  13. Hi Liz,

I wrote this article, and I just called the Utah College of Dental Hygiene to see if they are still offering free dental services at their campus. They are, and it’s still free. Did you go to their website, which I listed in the article? The link is featured in bright blue at the end. I thought it was pretty hard to miss. Perhaps you should try calling them at 801-426-8234 to set up an appointment.

  14. BullShip.. There is no such thing as free dental care in Utah. I know, I have looked online and in the phone book for months. Quit lying. These people do it for 1/2 price. Still WAY above the cheapest I could find.

    • Actually it’s true……we charge nothing for dental hygiene services…I know this because I was a student at UCDH for two years. As for “dental” procedures (ie crowns, bridges, fillings, extractions) yes, the clinic is half off. But that is still an amazing deal. I had my fillings done there and they look and feel great.
