A People's History Of Salt Lake City

UtahStories.com began with one idea: to begin building a living, on-line historical document on Salt Lake City and eventually all of Utah. We started by asking long-time Salt Lake City Merchants their opinions about the growth development of downtown Salt Lake City for as long as they can remember. The interviews were excellent and their insight unlike anything you have read in any history books. Now we are getting back to our original intent: to continue collecting stories to better understand our world in a greater context. We are still actively seeking stories that provide greater insight into our collective history. If you or someone you know has a great story to tell that can shed more light on the history of Salt Lake City, we would love to hear from you click here to send us your story.

Extreme Historical Revisionism found on Utah.com

Utah.com is a part of the the Utah travel council's effort to attract more tourists to Utah and Salt Lake City. With record numbers of visitors vacationing in Utah, the effort is working. However, their web content is very misleading. Here is one quote on the history of downtown Salt Lake City "In the 1970s new businesses and shopping malls were built and classic older buildings were renovated. City-wide beautification projects generated vitality and activity in the downtown community." Talk to any merchant on Main Street and they will offer a story exactly opposite of what is said here.

Proposed Skybridge is Causing a Divide

The City City Creek Center is being touted as the means to revitalize Main Street in Salt Lake City. No doubt what the L.D.S church's sponsored plans are beautiful. However, there are many critics of the assertion that a sky bridge is a " critical key component of the project ". Many believe that the sky bridge is only a mechanisim to keep shoppers from venturing outside of the project. Is the City Creek Center being built for the residents of Salt Lake City? Or for the shareholders of Taubman Company? Taubman is a well recognized national mall developer, who has a financial interest in the City Creek Center. Utah Stories examines whether Taubman's bridge is a confict to the overall stated goals of the project. This is our second video installment on this subject and third story. For nearly one year we have made attempts to get Taubman and/or CCRI's point of view. However, they have refused all requests for interviews. Our story is one-sided but that is only because the other side is unwilling to defend their position, outside of the Planning Commission doors.

Smart Growth in Utah & the West

As the population of Utah continues to grow, an uncomfortable yet critical question must be dealt with: Are we sacrificing our quality of life to accommodate more people? If you are concerned about air pollution, traffic problems, congestion and maintaining our wilderness and mountains then no doubt these aspects have have not improved as our population has increased.

So what can be done to help maintain the character and quality of life along the Wasatch Front and the West? In a three-part series Utah Stories examines questions concerning "smart growth". Its a buzz word that has attracted a following but yet many conservatives consider another liberal tactic to control our lives. What are the best compromises, solutions and ideas for handling our inevitable fate of at least 1 million more people in the next 13 years?

In part one, we look the negative impact sprawl is having on our health and communities. In part two, we examine what planners and City Leaders can do to improve the situation. Finally, in part three, we compare our lifestyle and growth pattern to cities that have virtually no suburban sprawl issues; We look to see what we can learn from places that have effectively handled their growth and maintained their living standards.

A hidden cost in the low price?

Many films have been made both for and against Wal-Mart and big-boxes. Bitter contention and debate has made this a divisive issue for many communities. The debate ultimately comes down to value. Should we place more value in our local community and local merchants; or does the greatest value come from the lowest price? In this investigation Utah Stories will look at the communities that have fought to keep Wal-Mart out and in the end lost or coalesced. As of today the record for city opponents vs. Wal-Mart in Utah is 0-3 for Wal-Mart. Sandy, Draper, Centerville all had opponents who saw Wal-Mart as a threat to their local communities. However, Wal-mart is a well-seasoned opponent in this area and they have fought this P.R. battle many times. Wal-mart has a huge war chest and they often spend hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars on publicity campaigns to convince citizens that their stores will offer more value in their tax revenue, employment opportunities and community incentives. Recently Wal-Mart convinced Sandy residents that rather than having a nature park and condos on their 300 acre former gravel pit development they could provide something better. Since the Sandy gravel pit was developed for Wal-Mart virtually nothing has been written about whether or not Sandy residents are still happy with their decision voting in favor of allowing Wal-mart to occupy the space. We will examine the latest battle grounds:Wal-Mart vs. the quaint Heber Valley and Wal-Mart vs. Sugarhouse. Both communities oppose the stores today, but like the others will they surrender to the enticing values and smiley faces? Wal-mart will likely spend a small fortune in the coming months on P.R and good spin, we will keep track of the score. For previous articles written on this subject and all of the specific questions we will attempt to answer in this on-going investigation.
Pioneer Park crystal meth problem

Like many other cities Salt Lake City has one park that attracts homeless, alcoholics, drug users and drug dealers. After repeated attempts by former Mayor Deedee Corradini and Rocky Anderson to clean up the park and crack down on offenders. It seems that law enforcement efforts have proven futile. We thought we would get a different side of the story from the downtrodden and homeless folks in the park who have seen the problems and attempted solutions first-hand. It wasn't easy to get these people to talk, we had to bribe them with burgers or money. By the end I had many burgers left and no money but I think this report shows a very unique perspective on the issue that politicians and law enforcement have neglected to see.

Uintah-Ouray Ute Reservation

Left behind, best describes the state of affairs for many of the Utah citizens who live on the Uintah-Ourray Reservation. Left behind from the success most of our state enjoys, left behind from good education, left out of enjoying a good like most Utah citizens. Ninety-percent of Ute teens drop out of High School. A huge portion of tribal members are on public assistance due to alcoholism and substance abuse. The Utes were once a strong close-knit group who were dedicated to passing on traditions to family. Today many children grow up neglected and abused. Why?

Davis County growth issues

Davis County residents have seen big changes in their communities in the past 10
years. Many are happy about the growth they have seen because their property values have risen so dramatically. However, some argue that they are loosing their sense of place, that the small town feel of towns like Centerville, Woods Cross and Clearfield is all but gone. The question I would like to answer in the coming two weeks (depending on the response I get to this story) is: What could have been done differently to retain more of the identity these places once had? How can we retain the small-town feeling of these and other cities along the Wasatch front and we grow and develop further. Is there a good solution to maintain strong city centers with fewer chain stores and more local merchants? Is there a good balance between accommodating traffic needs and still maintaining strong local businesses and local charm? Respond at richard@utahstories.com

Sugarhouse Residents Speak Out

An overflow crowd showed up on Tuesday, March 27 to show their opposition to the Sugarhouse redevelopment project. Young, old, hippy yuppie and grungy alike all demonstrated that they like Sugarhouse just the way it is. The City Council gave the crowd a total of half and hour to state their concerns. However beforehand Council members made it clear that there was no chance they were going to reverse their decision. So what happens next? Is there any hope of saving the unique local charm that exists on this block? Sugarhouse will indeed be transformed, but into what? We will continue to press for answers in the coming weeks, keep checking for updates and developments to this ongoing story.
