Hole-in-the-Wall Greatness: Masala owner is familiar with great food "in a hurry"

If you've ever been in the mood for Indian food but haven't had a lot of time to satisfy your craving, chances are you've turned to a little place on State St. whose name says it all: Curry in a Hurry. After years of business, Curry in a Hurry owner Saifar Nasir gave local aficionados of the Indian subcontinent's specialty a reason to rejoice with the opening of Masala Indian Grill in Sugarhouse this past January. Nasir said that Masala offers some traditional dishes that make it unique, not just from Curry in a Hurry, but from any restaurant in Utah.

"We have two tandoors -- clay ovens," Nasir said. "One dedicated just for the kababs, one dedicated just for the Naan bread . . . We have a new kebab coming out in about a week called the chicken cheese kabab that you won't find--I guarantee -- anywhere in the state of Utah."

Masala offers an array of succulent dishes whose style is unparalleled in Utah, such as marinated lamb tikka, Masala fish and a variety of naan bread wraps.

With Masala, Nasir can continue to contribute to Salt Lake's culinary diversity while satisfying both his patrons, and his own craving for good, local Indian food.

"The kind of food we have is kind of lacking a lot in Utah," Nasir said. "It's a funny story. I actually opened this restaurant more for myself because I love the food that we have here. I couldn't find it anywhere else."
