Utah Legislature: Horses, Homosexuality and Nuclear Waste
February 11th, 2009
Utah Stories given full access to Utah's Capitol: interviewing protesters, state leaders and lobying groups about neglected state issues.
Today I'm amazed by how easy it has been for a small independent news provider to get such great access to our state leaders. All within a period of less than three hours, I obtained press credentials; sat in on a press conference with Senate President Waddoups; met a lobbying group (Heal Utah) that says Energy Solutions has bought out our entire state government; and met with Rep. Bradley Last about his reflections on the voucher battle; and took numerous photos documenting everything. All of these stories and more will be forthcoming in the next few days.
Due to the overall mission of Utah Stories-- to not cover news from the top down (the perspective of those who have the power), but rather from the bottom up (from those who have little power)--we have spent very little time on Utah's Capitol hill.
This rare visit to Utah's State capitol was an effort to address the disconnects we have found between people and their government-- namely liquor law changes.
We will also report on other bills under consideration and passage, impressions on our government process and the debate we are hearing from our Sate leaders. But as usual, we will be covering legislation that we consider has the greatest impact on the lives of everyday Utahns. We are currently working on the following stories:
- Utah Family Makes it Their Mission To Condemn Governor Huntsman For New Stance on Civil Unions for Homosexuals.
- Waddoups Still Wants Alcohol Tracking Database -- But Not Drink Tracking
- A Whole Lot of Horsing Around A Resolution (see bill)
- House Says "No" to Bill That Would Allow Seniors Free Access to State Parks
- Naturalist Doctors Given Ability Prescribe Hormones to Patients (see bill)
- Has Energy Solutions Bought Their Way Into Storing Limitless Nuclear Waste in Utah?
